A Weekend of Exploring a Beautiful Culture

So, before the weekend I said I was going to hold out for a big exciting blog.  Well in my opinion, it is a great one just because of what I did, who I met, and all the updates.  It's weird or difficult to write everything that happened, and maybe to understand, so I will just write it from friday until today, and easy to follow.

Friday was probably the best night just because I got invited to a photography show/silent auction.  I was invited by some girls who I met last weekend through my roommates.  I wasn't going to go...but so happy I did.  We arrived at about 10, and if you want to see pics, there's a whole album up...but I'll put a few up here.  When we got there, no one was really there, but its a good thing we didn't leave because it was just a great place to meet expats (mostly english speaking europeans who moved here).  There's quite a lot of them.  But I met people from holland, peru, ireland, england, germany, scotland, someone who went to LANGLEY highschool, argentines, and just so many artists and journalists.  A band also played later in the night, and they were pretty good.  I also met a british girl who gave me info as to where I can teach...so that was great and I'm gonna wait until I know a little more Spanish, but it's definitely going to happen.  I also bought one of the artists' works, for my roommates because they loved it, and it was like 100 pesos, and wanted to give them a little thank you present.  I am meeting up with her tomorrow to get it and chat.  Jess, the photographer, is a california native and was very cool to talk to.  Anyways, overall it was just a great night.  I also practiced alot of spanish which was great.  I want to make sure I don't just friend english speakers because then I'll never be able to practice and as I am not avoiding them, because it is nice to have both...but want to make sure I try hard to put myself out there.

I bought the bottom right: drag queen

Saturday was a fun day, as carnaval is going on right now...literally on the corner of my street.  People sell and buy these foam spray cans and they literally have an all out war...very fun.  You know I would have destroyed, but I had my camera, so I was protecting myself haha...like I was going to get shot with a real gun LOL.  Anyways, I make it my mission every weekend to just get lost in the market, talk vendors up, buy junk, find new restaurants, bargain(although they're hard to work down!), and just explore.  This weekend was especially big, because It was carnaval, plus every weekend San Telmo, my barrio, has this huge flee market...every weekend! I've found so many treasures.  Another thing I started doing was antiquing (not what they did in jackass), but actually go through these amazingly large and full stores filled with forgotten treasures.  It's quite fun and everything is so cheap.  If anybody wants anything, let me know.  Saturday night, we were going to go to Nefertiti's, my favorite place, but there was an incredible blues band playing outside in the square with hundreds of people of all ages and backgrounds.  They were sick, again...put a video up on facebook.

But we were out there and these times are when you feel the most immersed.  And its cool when I talk to people and meet people, and get to tell them I live in San Telmo. They finished around 1am, which is equivalent to like 10pm in the states...so then we walked over to my favorite hole in the wall.  I went sat and sun night, and now am friends with them, and they want me to jam with them.  They play every night so are looking to possibly change it up or add new music to their repertoire....HOW ABOUT THAT :)  So that is just a huge thing for me.

Sunday was very similar to Saturday so I'm just going to say that it was another great day of solo-exploring and I bought my Andean flute.  Simple to play.  And yes, went back to Nefertiti's and it was absolutely amazing, classic latin american music.  two guitars, a bass, drums, keys, and a sick and supposedly famous trumpet player...and they killed it...and yes I was there until about 3am...so worth it.  Last night I met a danish girl, her aunt and her mom, and they were very nice.  I went to dinner with Manna, a guy who works at this restaurant My dad and I first went to.  Very cool guy, and we got food at his work, then completely coincidentally....fuck this is a small world....met a American Airlines pilot that lives in DC, and was traveling solo, so we invited him...and he stayed out with us the whole night and loved it.  I just loved the mix of people, how open people are to meeting new people, and just that mixing bowl feeling...and everyone has some kind of common ground, and everybody wants to meet new people.  Travelers are a very specific breed, there is always this higher awareness and curiosity about life and the world; constantly debating what's important in life etc.  I lover it though.  I'm sure most readers have experiences these kinds of things, but its always so exciting when it happens!
As of now, I'm going to be here for at least, 3 or 4 months.  I figured, I never studied abroad and felt I really should have...and now I am for a lot less money than a semester abroad...rent costing 300, and class around 200 a week for 25hrs...and I found that teaching connection...so everything is just working itself out...so I figure...why not let it happen :)  I also love the portenos of the town; everyone's passionate, friendly if you try to speak, and just so much flavor!  REALIZE, this does not mean I am not traveling anymore because I absolutely am, but I'm just going to do it when I am heading back and just also realized I can use this as my hub or home base because there are so many things, places I can get to from here: patagonia, uruguay, the falls, rivers, beaches, jungle, and It's relatively cheap to travel.

I kind of have a date on Wednesday which is exciting  I don't know if she'd call it that or not, and we hadn't specified...but I met an argentine girl last weekend, who studies in university, an artiste.  And at the least we are going out and are going to practice language and hangout.  She seems very sweet and is very pretty.  Buuuuut, I am not quite clear as to what it is, but I said we should hang out sometime, and now we are.  We're friends on FB, so I'm going to stop embarrassing myself hahaha

Tomorrow we are having a little valentine's day get-together with me and 9 girls which is going to be funny as hell and pretty awesome for me lol, it's a joke but still :)

I started the 1 on 1 conversational spanish, and today he said I had gotten so much better over the weekend, and was just shocked.  THATS HOW I DO ;)

Anyways, I hate this keyboard and don't want this to be too long!

I'll update as material comes up...until then Hasta Luego y Buenos Noches!
